WWI was one of the bloodiest wars in history, being named "The Great War" and "The War to End All Wars". More than thirty industrialized countries fought in the war, bringing with them the demands for the latest technologies and weapons. Many things were used in the terrible war, but the most feared and deadly weapon used was poison gas.
Many aspects of war were changed when the use of poison gas became popular. It's purpose was to end the war faster, as the trenches made fighting slow, however, it only made the war bloodier. What did poison gas do to make such a big impact on warfare? It caused more suffering on the battleground, terrorizing armies with burns, blisters, and choking fits. Poison gas changed warfare both then and today. The gasses themselves caused a chain reaction- tear gas led to chlorine, chlorine led to phosgene, and so on. The protection then led to the gas masks today, and the carnage overall led to a treaty that prohibits gas warfare today.
